How Will Small Businesses Recover from COVID?

Hint: It has almost everything to do with where we decide to put our money.

As the economic damage from the coronavirus pandemic and the social distancing measures gather strength, small business owners wonder if the resources put in place to help them will be enough. It's possible they won't, a recent survey published at the National Bureau of Economic Research predicts. If prolonged economic hardship can inflict a deep gash in large retail companies, what does its impact look like for small, local firms? Government loans notwithstanding, data from Yelp shows that nearly 60 percent of small businesses are facing permanent closure.

When a sharp recession is threatening the foundations of our communities and steady income can’t get into consumers’ pockets to create demand, it's no surprise to see a lot of local stores shut down. Many of them permanently.

America’s small businesses play a central role in the nation’s economy and culture, generating more than 44 percent of the US gross domestic product, according to a fact sheet released in June 2020 by the US Small Business Administration. Nearly 60 million Americans are employed by a small business, accounting for 47.3 percent of the nation’s workforce.

But beyond figures and statistics, experts agree, small businesses cement communities and neighborhoods. Local coffee shops and restaurants and book stores become routine gathering places and an active part of our daily life. They offer the comforting warmth big-box retailers often miss and make our neighborhoods feel like home. Most importantly, they create a virtuous circle, plowing money back into the community they reside in, creating job opportunities, supporting charitable causes, and boosting the local economy. Without these vital entities thriving, the future of our communities looks uncertain at best. This is why shopping locally is now more important than ever.
